5. “Denmark” – The Ocean Blue

(From the album Davy Jones’ Locker)

1999

Following the tour in support of See The Ocean Blue the band once again found themselves without a label to support them. However, the band knew they had a core of fans and so decided to move ahead without a label, ultimately releasing their fifth album Davy Jones’ Locker as a self-financed, independent release. This plan however ended up not being as successful as The Ocean Blue had hoped and ultimately they were only able to release 1000 copies of Davy Jones’ Locker through their website. Things began to improve for the band not long after though as independent March Records not only signed the band but also agreed to rerelease Davy Jones’ Locker, which then saw a wider release. Two singles were released from the album (both as EP’s with some newly written and recorded songs attached to the older album tracks). The first of these singles was “Denmark”, a classic Ocean Blue sounding song with the slight twist of being set to a drum track. The song has a wonderfully catchy guitar riff to serve as a hook, while singer David Schelzel’s voice still has the angelic wonder it always had. Because of the label issues and the current trends in music Davy Jones’ Locker was not a big success, largely only being heard by the band’s core fans, but for those fans “Denmark” was exactly what they have come to expect from The Ocean Blue.
